In a year that separates us physically, the 2021 scholars begin their Loran journeys from their hometowns spanning the farthest corners of Canada, bonded by their shared commitment to service and potential for leadership. Individually and collectively, these well-rounded students demonstrate strength of character and stand out for the many unique ways in which they combat isolation and injustice, pursue long-term solutions to improve their communities, and inspire others to do the same.
At Loran, we believe that a young person’s character is a better indicator of overall potential than standard academic measures. We also believe that compassion, courage of conviction, and dedication to community are essential for a better future. The 2021 class of Loran Scholars represents those very qualities — and together with our partners, we invest in their potential to grow into leaders of integrity.
To discover these traits, we administer the most comprehensive and thorough scholarship selection process in Canada. From September 2020 to March 2021, our 400+ volunteers reviewed 6,084 applications, held virtual semi-final events with candidates across the country, and conducted national interviews with 72 exceptional finalists. Up to 11 different volunteers expressed their support for each 2021 Loran Scholar over the course of our first-ever remote selections cycle.
Since 1988, the Loran Scholars Foundation has provided more than $50 million in undergraduate awards to promising young Canadians. As recipients of the Loran Award, scholars receive opportunities to explore, develop, and share their talents over four years of undergraduate study at one of 25 partner universities. The Loran Award includes an annual stipend of $10,000 and matching tuition waiver, access to funding for summer work experiences, one-on-one mentorship, and annual retreats and gatherings.
