The Loran Scholars Foundation is delighted to announce the 33rd cohort of Loran Scholars.
Although the past two years have been marked by unprecedented disruption, the 36 newly selected scholars have demonstrated resourcefulness and determination, finding ways to make the most of these extraordinary circumstances and meaningfully serve their communities across Canada. They have found ways to step up and address the challenges within and beyond their hometowns, to speak up to address injustices, and raise up others along the way.
At Loran, we believe that strong character and integrity are a better measure of a person’s long term potential than standard academic measures. The 2022 Loran Scholars have been identified because of their commitment to building a better future for all by prioritizing compassion, courage of conviction, and dedication to community. Together with our partners, we invest in their potential to grow into leaders of integrity.
To discover one’s strength of character, commitment to service, and leadership potential, we administer the most comprehensive and thorough scholarship selection process in Canada. By the time a scholar is selected they have been assessed and interviewed by 12 people. From September 2021 to March 2022, our 400+ volunteers reviewed 5,174 applications, held semi-final events with candidates across the country, and conducted national interviews with 90 exceptional finalists. It is a testament to the fundamental nature of the values we seek, that regardless of the channel, those values were able to shine through in each 2022 Loran Scholar while conducting our second virtual selection process. Our optimism about Canada’s future is uplifted through the ongoing support of our community and the identification of these young people who have the tenacity, passion, and abilities to create positive change.
Since 1988, the Loran Scholars Foundation has provided more than $57 million in undergraduate awards to promising young Canadians. As recipients of the Loran Award, scholars receive opportunities to explore, develop, and share their talents over four years of undergraduate study at one of our 25 partner universities. The Loran Award includes financial support in the form of a living stipend and tuition waiver; a comprehensive, four-year leadership enrichment program; and opportunities to build community with a diverse network of values-driven peers, mentors, alumni, and supporters.
