LORAN, short for Long-Range Aid to Navigation, is a system that uses three points (for us, our values of character, service and leadership) to determine one's course for a long journey. The name emphasizes the lifelong impact and values of being a Loran Scholar.

#Loran2021 | Meet Emma Harris from Winnipeg, MB:

Emma is co-president of her school’s student council, co-editor of yearbook, founder of a peer tutoring program, and leader within Physics Club and Girls in Stem Club. She volunteers with local food banks and in 2020, she helped run a hamper program for families impacted by COVID-19. Emma works part-time as a tutor and at a locally owned clothing store.

Emma est coprésidente du conseil des élèves, corédactrice en chef de l’album des finissants, fondatrice d’un programme de mentorat entre élèves et leader du club de physique et du club des élèves de science, technologie, génie et mathématiques de son école. Bénévole pour quelques banques alimentaires de sa région, elle a participé à un programme d’aide aux familles touchées par la COVID-19. Emma travaille à temps partiel comme tutrice et comme vendeuse dans un magasin familial de vêtements.

#Loran2021 | Meet Eman Shayeb from Edmonton, AB:

Eman is the president and founder of a provincial non-profit dedicated to fighting period poverty. She has worked on a podcast, and is co-writing a book on stigmas in Muslim communities. At her school, she established the Principal Advisory Committee, and participates in the Social Justice Club. Eman sells paintings across North America, and was a WISEST mechanical engineering intern.

Eman est fondatrice et présidente d’une organisation provinciale sans but lucratif de lutte contre la précarité associée aux menstruations. Elle a participé à la création d’un balado et à la rédaction d’un livre sur la stigmatisation dans les communautés musulmanes. Eman a créé le comité consultatif de la direction de l’école en plus de participer aux activités du club de justice sociale de l’établissement. Elle peint et vend ses œuvres partout en Amérique du Nord. Elle a été stagiaire du programme de boursières en génie mécanique WISEST.

#Loran2021 | Meet Chidiebere Okarah from Surrey, BC:

Chidiebere is the Environmental Coordinator on the BC Youth Council, working to reduce single-use plastics in her community. Over four years, she served as Drumming Leader at African Stages Association of BC, empowering hundreds of youth. She has initiated various Model United Nations Conferences, organized school events as a student council executive, and performed in five school music ensembles.

Chidiebere est coordonnatrice de la section environnement du conseil des jeunes de la Colombie-Britannique, dont la mission consiste notamment à réduire l’usage des plastiques jetables dans sa région. Chef de la section des tambours de l’African Stages Association de la province, elle a inspiré des centaines de jeunes et a joué avec cinq ensembles scolaires. Membre du bureau du conseil des élèves, Chidiebere est à l’origine de plusieurs activités du club ONU mise en scène et d’autres activités scolaires.
