Rafael is pursuing the joint Bachelor of Laws and Juris Doctor program at Université de Montréal. The highlights of his academic career include an internship at the Superior Court of Québec as a research assistant and at Université de Montréal’s Legal Clinic. Rafael also offered free legal services through his involvement with the aforementioned clinic, on top of his role as coordinator of the Law Students’ Association’s Mentorship Program. This summer, Rafael will complete an internship with the International Bar Association in London and, for the Barreau du Québec, with law firm Gowling WLG, which sparked his keen interest in civil litigation and Indigenous law. Beyond his career, Rafael is passionate about playing the saxophone, running, and film.

Ava is pursuing a BSc in physics and astronomy at the University of Waterloo, where she mentors first-year physics students through FemPhys and supports STEM outreach initiatives that have introduced over 1,000 students in rural Ontario to robotics, engineering, and the sciences. Through Map the System, she researched the socioeconomic impacts of special metal mining in Sierra Leone, analyzing regulatory frameworks, environmental damage, and local livelihoods while collaborating with policymakers, labourers, and scholars. Ava also volunteers at House of Friendship in Waterloo, assisting community members navigating social services paperwork and connecting students to funding and mentorship opportunities.

Sofie is pursuing a B.Sc. in anatomy and cell biology at McGill University. During a past Loran summer, she joined the One Health team at Doctors of the World Belgium, deepening her understanding of global public health and interdisciplinary care. She continues to work with one of her previous Loran summer hosts, Helicopters Without Borders, a Vancouver-based public health NGO, where she serves as a grant writer and program coordinator. At McGill, Sofie represents the Faculty of Science on the university senate. She has led conversations with senior leadership on campus safety, student wellbeing, and academic reform, and contributes to advisory groups on enrolment, health and safety, and freedom of expression. She has also conducted research in McGill’s Department of Pharmacology, contributing to emerging literature in cell biology.

Émilia is a Computer Engineering student at McGill University. Passionate about inclusivity, she plans conferences and workshops through an organization called Promoting Opportunities for Women in Engineering. She also designs assistive technology for Montreal’s disabled community with the Assistive Technology McGill club and Makers Making Change.

Pursuing a B.Sc. in astrophysics, Zaneb volunteers at the university’s Rothney Astrophysical Observatory to promote interests in STEM. They volunteer at the public library as part of numeracy and literacy programs, working with children to support them outside of the classroom. They spent their Loran community development summer interning with Women’s Shelters Canada, researching the role of telecommunications companies in enabling human rights abuses against victims and survivors of gender-based violence
