Garvit is pursuing a degree in electrical engineering at the University of Waterloo. He is a member of the engineering society, representing his cohort and communicating relevant issues to his peers. He has completed two internships in different industries to explore various fields of technology and develop his interests. On top of his studies, Garvit continues to volunteer at local conservatories and zoos.

Hannah is pursuing a BCom in business, economics, and law with a biology minor at the University of Alberta. She completed her community development summer at Windmill Microlending, where she researched different career pathways for internationally trained professionals to achieve accreditation in Canada, and developed strategies to optimize engagement from currently inactive partners. Hannah also interned with the City of Edmonton’s Data Science and Research team; she researched and operationalized data related to technology solutions. Hannah currently serves on the board of Music Unbounded—a local non-profit she co-founded in 2021, mentors a group of Grade 9 girls at her church, and leads the executive team as president of the Stollery for Youth Committee at the University of Alberta.

Maryam was the President of her high school’s Student Council and founder of the Social Justice and Student Involvement Club. She also interned at a research lab at the University of Alberta. Maryam is a volleyball player, an avid volunteer, and a tutor/mentor within her Somali community.

Mahdi is pursuing an honours bachelor of science, specializing in biotechnology with a major in biology for health sciences and a minor in chemistry at the University of Toronto Mississauga. He served as president of the UTM Pre-Medical Club and is a medical first responder with ECSpeRT, providing on-site emergency care during campus events. As a facilitated study-group leader, he supports student learning in core science courses through collaborative academic mentorship. Mahdi is completing a senior thesis examining the correlation between multiple sclerosis and aging. Outside of academics, Mahdi is committed to community health advocacy and organizes local walking programs to promote accessible wellness and preventative care.

Lucas is currently pursuing a degree in environmental engineering at the University of British Columbia, with a strong focus on renewable energy. During his second Loran summer, he worked in Sierra Leone with a social enterprise as an engineering intern, dedicated to developing solar power grids in remote communities across West Africa. At UBC, Lucas serves as an executive member of the student energy team, which is committed to advancing the global energy transition. Outside of academics, he enjoys cooking, playing intramural sports, and carpentry. Whenever possible, he returns to his hometown to mentor youth and volunteer at the local golf course.

Pursuing a B.Sc. in astrophysics, Zaneb volunteers at the university’s Rothney Astrophysical Observatory to promote interests in STEM. They volunteer at the public library as part of numeracy and literacy programs, working with children to support them outside of the classroom. They spent their Loran community development summer interning with Women’s Shelters Canada, researching the role of telecommunications companies in enabling human rights abuses against victims and survivors of gender-based violence
