Sarah is co-president of her school’s student representative council. She is an active volunteer in her school’s peer buddy group for students with disabilities, a group fundraising for cancer research, as well as in a community outreach club she established. Sarah spends her summers working at Camp Glenburn as a leadership counsellor, leading campers on week-long canoeing and backpacking trips.
Marilou helped found and grow a thrift store at her school. She first became involved with her student council in 2018 and is now the president. In addition to working at a bakery for three years, she is also an emcee. She captains her volleyball team, participates in various fundraisers, and acts as student representative on the parent committee and within the school district.
Irina has worked as a camp counsellor at the Multicultural Association of Fredericton, supporting children and youth newcomers and refugees. She volunteers as a karate coach with the YMCA. Irina reestablished and systemized a homework club at her school, helping newcomer students to learn French and access academic assistance. She has illustrated books and organized a fine arts club, which she continues to lead.
Carly is president of a student-led club working to benefit children in Uganda by fundraising for things such as planting fruit trees at schools and building dorms for girls to stay at school to reduce the risk of being kidnapped during travel back and forth. She is a dedicated volunteer at school events and has taken on several leadership roles. She also works as a City swim instructor and a server at a retirement home. Carly enjoys playing rugby and softball, and engaging her imagination through writing with her younger brothers.
Lana helped establish a kids’ program that mentors youth in French literacy, offers arts and crafts programs, encourages community outreach, and holds fundraisers. She founded and leads her school’s student newspaper and crochet club, and she is head editor of the yearbook. Lana volunteers for her local library, where she also worked as a program coordinator. In her spare time, Lana enjoys practicing yoga, making jewelry, crocheting, and creative writing—and she created a business offering youth improv classes.
Chioma is the president and founder of her school’s Black Students’ Association. She created a peer- tutoring program at school to help students in math and English. Born in Nigeria, Chioma was a member of her school’s student government, where she organized protests and led a march to the principal’s office to protest unfair rationing to girls during a food shortage. She is also a U-Report ambassador with UNICEF. In her spare time, she enjoys playing badminton with her family, as well as cooking and photography.
Sally was a competitive swimmer for many years. A nationally certified lifeguard, she was also involved in the development of young, pre-competitive swimmers as a swim coach and instructor. Sally works as a respite-care provider, and in recent years, has worked as a camp counsellor at a summer camp for people with disabilities. Sally also tutors at school, and mentors students through the Best Buddies program.
Billy is the president of the student council, where he plans and organizes memorable events for the school community. As co-founder and president of a school economists club, he educates his peers on different aspects of business, including financial literacy. He also founded a club that offers one-on-one math tutoring to struggling students. Billy competes in various school sports, such as soccer, volleyball, and track and field.
Neila is currently starting a bachelor’s degree in pharmacology at McGill University. Her passions include literature, poetry, theatre, and science, having received provincial and national recognition for her creations and projects. Neila created the SalleZen concept, which provides a safe space to students from her school who are struggling with mental health. Neila is also a member of the New Brunswick Youth Advisory Committee for Mental Health, which strives to prevent youth suicide. Meanwhile, Neila is an active member of the McGill poetry collective, where she shares her passion for the written word with other community members.
Ana is studying health sciences specializing in the respiratory system at Dalhousie University. She is an executive member of the SPRING accessibility program for children in the community on campus. She volunteers as a mentor for students pursuing STEM education. Ana completed her public policy summer with the Nature Trust of New Brunswick.
