Hilus is a member of the Waterloo Engineering Society and the Waterloo Engineering Endowment Fund – a program that provides funding for research and projects. He is an active member of UWAFT, a student design team that works with alternatively fueled vehicles. Hilus spent a winter semester working as a Build Specialist at a Canadian software company, OpenText, where he worked on infrastructure security and app development. Hilus is studying Computer Engineering.

While studying Electrical Engineering at the University of Waterloo, Nain is a member of the Aerial Robotics Group Electrical Team and an executive member of the National Society of Black Engineers. Additionally, he has volunteered at Open House Days, works with the executive team to increase the number of black engineers at Waterloo, and supports the delivery of mental health events for current students. Nain served as the event representative for his residence floor, helping to create a positive experience for other residents. To utilize his love of writing, he helps co-op students in various programs sharpen their writing skills for resumes and cover letters.

Ava is pursuing her BSc in Physics at the University of Waterloo and is a mentor for girls interested in pursuing a future in STEM. She is involved with Map the System, an international composition that explores the links between early-age literacy and incarceration rates. Ava volunteers at several homeless shelters in the Waterloo region and participated in her campus’s opioid harm reduction program, where she helped provide stigma-free education on harm reduction techniques.
