Originally from Québec City, Rita Devlin Marier (Loran Scholar ‘03) chose to study political science and economics at the University of Ottawa. She served as external affairs representative of a student association and as associate editor of the French-language student newspaper. Rita also worked as a page at the House of Commons to experience the legislative process firsthand.
Rita made the most of her experience as a Loran Scholar by exploring her interest in international affairs. She spent one summer coordinating a literacy project for young girls in India and participated in an academic exchange to Lund University in Sweden.
After graduation, Rita obtained an MA in international journalism from Université Laval. She worked at Agence France-Presse in Stockholm, at The Hill Times in Ottawa and at The Canadian Press in Montreal. In 2013, Rita joined Bloomberg News, an international news service. She monitors and breaks market-moving news from around the world by using Twitter and other social networks.
For Rita, becoming a Loran Scholar means gaining the freedom to make the most of one’s university experience. “It’s something that pushes us to seek out new experiences and motivates us to trust ourselves, our abilities and our potential.”
A donor since 2006, she volunteers with the Loran Scholars Foundation as an assessor.
